3It's fine...  Sep 20, 2006
By MickiRae
Not sure why the ALL CAPS review below is so dramatic. I have two basset hounds -- long, heavy, large breed dogs -- and both of them use this with no issues. It assembles easily and the cover fits over it fine.

Yes, it is lightweight (which the product description tells you, so that should be no surprise) so yes, if a dog wanted to play with it as a toy, they could. Here's a thought: Don't let it do that!

While it is lightweight, it has no-skid pads on the bottom that hold it steady while the dog is climbing it. Even on hardwood floors, which is what I have in my bedroom. My 60 lb basset hounds climb up it with no problems, no slipping. I spent a few minutes teaching them how to use it, and they're fine.

The only problem I really have with it is that it is pretty low when assembled, only three steps (the packaging and pictures on TV often show the 4-stair version) so if you have a taller bed or couch, you would want to buy the additional 4th stair and cover. The package I bought included an order form to do that inside of it, so that's fairly easy, though I do think that the manufacturer should offer that as an accessory that you can buy through the retailers (like Amazon or Target) just as it sells the regular product.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for. This is a pretty inexpensive product with average quality -- you aren't getting a fine piece of furniture, but I have NOT found it in unsafe or defective in any way. It functions fine. However, if you're looking for something super heavy and solid and not lightweight/portable, then this is NOT the item for you. Go ahead and shell out the extra $50 for the big wooden steps. There are a ton of those on Amazon.

5great product  Nov 01, 2006

2 happy Chihuahuas here will testify this is a nifty product. 3-step version is fine for average chair or sofa (get the 4th step for a bed) - easy to put together and sturdy enough for toy or medium breeds.

4Very Acceptable Pet Steps  Nov 26, 2006
By N. Smiley "Dogperson"
We bought two of the 4-steps about a year ago and are buying two more for our three shih tzus. The steps are lightweight, sturdy (we break them down and take them on road trips for use in the hotels/motels). They are easily assembled and disassembled. The girls have had no problems using the steps and one of them likes to hide under the set in the family room for her afternoon naps. We're buying more for grandma's house, etc. Our dogs use these steps many, many times a day and we're pleased how well the product holds up to what has to be called 'excessive' use by our two one-year-olds playing tag hours on end, using these steps. A good product at a good price. We're buying more.

4Works great for cats!  Oct 05, 2006
By J.E.
I bought several 3 and 4 step ones for my 3-legged cat. He lost a front leg due to an encounter with something. I'm not sure what though as it happened while I was out of town. Anyway, one front leg had to be amputated.

These steps are perfect for him. Now he can get up and down from the sofa, his cat condo, the front porch bench, or the beds, with little effort. Much better for his remaining front leg. The only thing I don't like about these is they can't slide under furniture when not in use, well not without taking them apart. And I paid way more for mine than what they cost now. I think I paid around $40 each. Bed, Bath and Beyond has a folding style now that I like better, but I don't need any more. These are fine. And besides, everyone I know knows my tripod cat too. The steps are very light wight so they can be moved easily to another room if I want to.

4Good for the price  Jan 27, 2009
By JChiCago
Deluxe is not quite the word to describe these doggy steps, but for the cheap price, they're a good bargain compared to other doggy stairs you can buy! Easy to assemble. Seems just like cheap plastic, but it's pretty sturdy. It only took a few times of luring my dog up the steps with a treat before she was using them on her own. The stairs haven't slipped once when she has used them and she hasn't fallen off them. The fabric covering is very helpful for providing traction for the dog.

Again, like many other reviews say, the 3 stairs are really short (good for chairs/sofas but not for beds!) - and what a pain to buy the 4th step. Why can't they just sell a set of 4-step doggy steps instead of having to pay more and order it separately? And the extra $10 for the extra step is really frustrating b/c you know that's kind of a rip off.

In any case, good product for the price - it does it's job. Minus one star because they won't sell the 4-stairs as a set and you have to order the 4th step separately.
