nuts and bolts Jul 25, 2008
By Johan Styles bought two armless chairs and the ottoman and corner chair. the ottoman went together quite easily...but when assembling the corner chair it's best to be VERY careful in which order you screw all the nuts and bolts in. there is one bolt inparticular....that if you wait till the end to add it, you quite literally have to take the whole thing apart and start over.
also....i do NOT recommend assmebling this thing alone. it takes two people....one to hold up the slats and pieces while another screws it all in.
the overall quality of the chair is very nice tho. built in vietnam (so the sticker says) and all the wood joints fit well. the assembly instructions could have been drawn out clearer.
one other piece of advice....this chair is MUCH larger than i imagined (and yes i measured it out before buying). it would not fit thru my door to my patio, so i had to undo everything and start over. you have been warned!
one last thing....im not a fan of the white cushions...but i noticed places like Pottery Barn have colored replacements you can order if you dont like the stark white.

Great product but may be difficult to maintain Sep 22, 2009

"Cacahuete"
I purchased several pieces from the Starthwood Balboa series about a year and a half ago. I made the mistake of not protecting from the weather when I first got it. After the first summer, it was covered in mold. I tried to get it steam cleaned. This did not work. The only way to clean mold is by using bleach (good thing the product is white!). So I had to remove the covers on all my cushions - which was quite difficult. Then I placed the covers in a top loader washing machine in cold water and lots of bleach. I let it soak overnight and then I did a few rinses to get as much of the chlorine smell out. I had to do several batches since I had so many covers. I dryed it on a low heat setting since I didn't want them to shrink. This got out most of the stains. Do not wash in hot water, this seems to set the stains instead of take them out. Once the covers were all clean and dry, I put them back on the cushions - a real pain in the neck! When removing and putting the covers on the cushions, a good technique is to fold the cushion in half and then shimmy the covers on or off. After all the covers were back on the cushions, I sprayed them with a mold inhibitor (I used 303 High Tech Fabric Guard - you can order it online). Our patio furniture is in a gazebo so I put up curtains to keep out most of the rain and wind. This helped to keep the furniture nice and clean. This year I won't have to go through the bleaching ordeal.

Nice, sturdy furniture for indoor or outdoor use Nov 13, 2009
By Amy L I bought 2 corner pieces and put them facing each other, creating a loveseat. I needed something modular for my office, which is a pretty small room, and this works perfectly. I have an antique oak drawing table in there as well as very old oak floors, and to my delight this "kapur" wood went really well with those finishes. It is a dull finish, which I think is why it works. The cushions are really firm, probably good for sitting outdoors but kind of rigid for an indoor room. The covers are a muslin--type fabric that is sort of a yellowish-white. It probably looks nice and crisp outdoors, but indoors it's a little too yellow, so I am going to try Rit as one of the reviewers mentioned. The assembly is not bad--but there is one important trick to it (the corner seat piece only). You have to be sure to slip 2 of the cams into the holes on the front right edge (according to the pic here)--you slip them in but don't fasten them with a screw until the side piece has been installed. The instructions do not mention this at all, and then you end up with a loose side piece and 2 extra cams! So make sure you slip them in before putting on the side piece, and I even held the cams in position temporarily with two screws until right before taking them straight out carefully and sliding the side piece on.

Great sectional Aug 13, 2008
By anim8t I ordered 4 pieces from the strathwood balboa set (armless chair, corner chair, chaise and ottoman to form a sectional) and I LOVE them. I checked out a very similar sectional at Pottery Barn for over $3000 and I'm so glad that I bought this one instead. It arrived on time, in great condition. Amazon service was incredible when one of the pieces was held up, they made sure it arrived on time. It was relatively easy to put together, but did require a little muscle. Once assembled, it is rock solid and really great looking. The cushions are very firm and look terrific in cream, but wont stay clean for long. I don't think they are weather resistant but the whole set is so affordable. I think I'll dye them a taupe or chocolate color to hide the wear. Great furniture, great service, great buy!!!!

You get what you pay for... Oct 28, 2009
By Cul Mum After owning this set for 6 months, I would have to say they are not the same quality as higher-end teak furniture.
** The wood needed to be sealed as soon as it arrived. ** Assembly should have been easy if the holes were better aligned. ** It is a heavy, Sturdy product. ** the fabric is AWEFUL for outdoors. Don't buy it and expect NOT to get it recovered. We don't even use it because we wanted to keep it looking nice for special occasions, but it STILL look horrible just from the elements. This set sits next to a table chair set that is 5 years old and the fabric on it looks brand new. The Balboa set is moldy, mildewy and stained. ** The cushions are hard as a rock! Seriously! **So they look great for a few weeks, that's it! Now I need ot get them recovered and re-sealed.
