4A great monitor for office work!  Nov 17, 2008
By Peter
(This review is for the Samsung SyncMaster 943T Monitor.)

I have had two of these monitors since April 2008. Just before that, I've also tried the Samsung 943B (for about a week) which had a funny sparkly shine on the screen and very poor viewing angles (so I returned it to the store). The frame all around the 943T screen is quite thin, so the emphasis is on the LCD screen. I use one 943T in landscape (for Outlook, Excel, etc.) and the other in portrait mode (for Word, Internet, etc.). When in vertical (portrait) mode, you can even divide the screen into two, and you'll end up with two near 14-inch diagonal wide-screen displays one on top of the other (really good for Internet browsing).

This monitor has a 5:4 aspect ratio, which, for doing text work and web browsing, I much prefer over the 16:9 format (or even the 16:10).

As far as the main specs, this monitor has 250 cd/m2 Brightness (very easy on the eyes) and a 1,500:1 Contrast Ratio. The Horizontal and Vertical Viewing Angles are superior at 178 degrees each (and you can tell too). Yes, the actual viewing angles on the 943T are excellent in all directions - you are not going to be disappointed. (The viewing angles on the 943B are 170 degrees horizontal and 160 degrees vertical, but if you moved your head even a little bit to the right or left, the display lost its crispness and focus very quickly. And for vertical viewing, in portrait mode, you didn't even have to move your head - just your eyes - and there was a noticeable difference in the top half and the bottom half of the screen.)

If you are looking for a monitor to do Word, Excel, Publishing and/or Internet browsing, then this is an absolutely perfect, easy on the eyes, high contrast monitor. You won't be disappointed.

But if you mostly watch DVD movies and play games, you should check out other monitors that are brighter, faster and have a wide screen (for example, the 22-inch Lenovo L220X would be an excellent choice for those purposes - a very high quality and solid monitor for the money, especially for day-time movie viewing).

Why did I give it a 4-star rating if I like it so much? For the adjustment buttons on the frame (located near the bottom right corner). They are absolutely horrible! They are not even buttons - but points (or small areas), flush with the bezel. They only require a light (and silent) touch from the warmth of your finger, IF YOU CAN FIND THEM. And it is very easy to set the buttons off accidentally (if you bump into them with your hand - even if very lightly - and your settings can unintentionally change!). Luckily, you won't have to adjust the display characteristics often. (Just set it and forget it - and stay away from them!) I think Samsung chose this method to make the monitor look clean and pretty, so that there are no protruding (and visible) buttons on the bezel. I also have an older SyncMaster 191T-Plus with the "visible" bar-buttons and they are just fine. There is nothing wrong with them and they look very professional, and they require a deliberate click-touch to adjust.

Update 08MAR2009: One of the other reviews of this product mentioned the Magic Tune Premium software that comes with the CD included with the purchase of the 943T. It is claimed that through this software you can adjust the properties of the monitor without having to use the physical display buttons on the bezel. However, if you have a multiple-monitor setup (say, three or four monitors hooked up to your PC via two separate video cards), the Magic Tune Premium software might not work, i.e., you'll get a message that it is not compatible with your computer (at least that is my experience with this software). But, fortunately, good video cards nowadays include their own software that will allow you to on-screen adjust (or fine tune) at least the Gamma, Brightness and Contrast properties of your screen, separately for each of your monitors.

One more thing. If you are looking for a non-Samsung alternative, either the HP L1955 or HP LP1965 model would be an excellent choice too.

5Outstanding monitor for word processing and web surfing  Feb 20, 2009
By S. C. Moore
I bought this monitor for word processing and web surfing. I do alot of word processing and emailing, so crisp text is paramount. I do not play games so cannot attest to its capability in that regard, other than having read that its 25 ms response time is not conducive to gaming.

Because this is a Super Patterned Vertical Alignment (S-PVA) display versus my former Twisted Nematic (TN) display (the vast majority of displays are TN), I am able to view it from above, below, and to the side with much less degradation in picture quality. Initially, I was disappointed with the quality of text and graphics until I installed the Magic Tune Premium software from the enclosed disc. Voila! The text suddenly became crisp and the pictures sharp and well balanced in appearance. The Magic Tune Premium icon appears in the lower right corner of the taskbar at the bottom of the computer. Clicking on it brings up an easy to manage series of menus on the screen, allowing for easy adjustment of all the display values. Having this onscreen capability means you never have to touch any of the display buttons on the bottom of the monitor display (except for the easy to find power button), a shortcoming noticed by another reviewer. You can set your own values or opt for preset brightness and contrast values that Samsung supplies via a Magic Bright menu. The values include default brightness and contrast settings for text, internet, game, sports, and movie. After much experimenting, I have settled on the Magic Bright default brightness and contrast values for internet (brightness 52, contrast 75)and text (brightness 34, contrast 75). I manually set the sharpness at 100. These settings give my eyes a relaxed feeling.

Highly recommend this monitor if your main uses are word processing and web surfing.

4Samsung 943T - hope it lasts  Aug 28, 2008
By B. Riggs
I've had the Samsung 943T 19" LCD monitor about a month. The display is excellent, with sharp text and good colors. I got it because my Samsung 173P lost power about a year-and-a-half out of the warranty period. The original 173P had to be replaced about a year into the warranty period, but I decided to gamble anyway, and stay with Samsung, hoping for a longer life with the 943T.

The 173P was a pivoting 17" LCD with a fine display. It was more solidly constructed than the 943T, but the 943T cost less than half what I paid for the 173P.

I have generally used these monitors in the 90-degree pivot mode--mainly for word processing and the internet. In the 90-degree mode, I prefer these to the pivoting wide-screen models, which are more unwieldy and, for my purposes, do not provide any more utility.

5Great LCD Monitor  Jan 30, 2009
By S. C. Terrence Ma
I bought this lcd monitor last week and this is one of the best monitors I have used. This monitor is MVA (8-bit) which is different than the standard TN (6-bit). The monitor displays true 8-bit 16 million colors and it does not need to do dithering like the 6-bit TN monitors. The monitor is bright and clear and I love to do my work on this monitor.
