Great set Oct 18, 2006
By S. Eisenberg Great set. Wonderful picture. Lots of inputs - including a cablecard which I love. Great 1080i. Don't know how it handles 1080p since I don't have my PS3 - yet. Not clear if it will do 1080p on the HDMI although the specs are clear it will do that on the components.
Only some oddball things annoy me:
* Very hard to set favorite channels. Just gave up.
* Labelling of the channels does not include channel logos (like my LG does; great feature)
* Lack of a guide. Kind of stupid to have a cablecard and have to switch to the Comcast STB to see what's on.
* PIP seems to be restrictive on what can be in the main picture. You can put the digital tuner in the PIP but you can't activate the PIP if the digital tuner is the main picture (not the PIP)
* Menu system is slow. Often you click the remote and the menu doesn't change. Thought for a while the remote signal did not register but now think the menu is just slow and misses the signal.

Dazzling Picture Quality! - But DIED after 4 years! Dec 26, 2006
By Lee Picton

It was actually looking at dozens of flat-panel sets that prompted me to choose this one, and I am entirely satisfied with my choice. The first DVD I watched was Lawrence of Arabia, and it was truly like sitting in the theater. The few HD channels we actually get (through Comcast in Howard County, MD), show the promise that all HD will eventually bring. That being said, there is a caveat with regard to the Cablecard feature, which I wanted to activate, and did, with disappointing results, though it seems to be largely a Comcast problem, who claimed, after four tries, that they couldn't guarantee compatibility. (They do have a powerful disincentive to provide this service, BTW). So I had to go with a cable box and all its attendant wiring; since this TV is mounted over a fireplace, it involved a fair amount of extra holes in the walls. Since I bought this, the price has even come down a bit more, which was to be expected, but overall, this set provided the best "bang for the (LCD) buck." Fast forward almost 4 years to the day. My gorgeous baby just died. The repairman was here and found a crack in the main board. Said it was a manufacturer defect and it would cost almost $500 to fix it. I have had other Samsung products and they have been wonderful, so maybe it was the luck of the draw, but I am disappointed. But I did not have it fixed. The prices have come down so much, I am going to get a bigger screen and LED technology for $1000 less than I originally paid for this one. And yes, I will get a Samsung, but maybe I will get an extended warranty.

Great LCD model Jan 17, 2007
By Mike Singh I narrowed my TV choices to this model and the Sony KDL-46XBR2. Both had great pictures, but the price differential on the Sony was a bit much for me. Amazon had an excellent price on this TV.
The Sony has 3 HDMI inputs while this has 2, but that wasn't a big deal for me. Also, I found out the Samsung can take high def over component cables too, which was important to me because that's how my Xbox 360 outputs high definition content. Standard definition over component cables displays pretty well. However, over the traditional Coax cable, the picture quality is notably worse.
For an LCD, the black levels on this TV were also excellent. Based on that, I felt I wasn't losing anything by choosing this TV over a plasma.
The TV accepts up to 1080p, which was important to me because I wanted some degree of future proofing. However, 1080p content is really limited. None of my cable channels are broadcast in 1080p. Right now, it's limited mostly to game consoles and blu-ray DVD disks.
This TV has picture in picture, but I've had some trouble figuring out how to make it work. I ended up using the picture in picture feature on my new cable box instead.
All in all, I am very satisfied with the TV.

Performs as a monitor too!! Jan 06, 2007
By Sonny This TV/Monitor rocks!!
I've been looking for a combo computer monitor and TV that I could use in my office. This LCD does both very well. I'm writing this review with the LNS4696D installed and everything on the screen is very large (what I wanted) even at 1600x1200 and the resolution is far better than I expected!! (hint: sharpen the image and set high energy saving mode)

Great TV if you need a cable card version Mar 23, 2007
By R. Dick WARNING, DO NOT BUY THIS SET UNLESS YOU NEED OR CAN USE A CABLE CARD. Buy the cheaper version without it that is the same in every other way.
Pros.
Black levels look very good for a LCD, matter of fact when bright levels are set up for watching a movie in a dark room the black areas almost blend into the piano plack frame of the TV.
The mura/clouding is very low, almost non existant on my set, something
Sony hasn't been doing so well at
The colors look great as well after some adjusting
The responce time is fast enough to work fine with PS3 games even when The Sammy isnt set to game mode.
The black finish looks great and high class and the stand is nice.
Nice range and number of imputs even if another HDMI would be nice
Easy to use and set up menu wise.
Cons.
Poor remote... I really dislike the way it behaves and its lay out.
The picture quality controls are a bit too simple and limited for a TV in this class in my opinion, just not enough user controled options.
The digital audio out seems to revert all imputs from a HDMI cable to just standard PCM stereo instead of Dolby 5.1 ect.. that maybe comming from the HDMI cable.
The secondary PIP picture can only come from two sources, over the air or the internal cable card capability, so anything hooked up by HDMI or component or composit cables can't be displayed.
The picture quality with lower def signals are only fair as expected, but I know some other sets do better. I have actually found that using the old cheap RF cable as the imput from my DTV box looks better then component cables since it takes out some of the blockyness.
The zoom function designed to make a 16:9 picture transmitted in a 4:3 box fill the screen chops off a tiny bit of the edges, this really goes back to not enough user adjustability problem.
Over all it's a fantastic set for the money that I think nearly every one will be happy with. I'd given if 5 stars with a couple small improvements, improvements a lot of people wouldn't even notice or care about.
