3Great HD video quality, but not so great audio quality  May 25, 2010
By Howard Van Ackooy
For starters, if you have a Mac, the software program included with the camera did not work on my 6 month old Mac. iMovie should upload it though. Here are some of my observations:

Likes:
Picture quality with HD setting, and fine setting (there is also a better super fine setting), was stunning on my 55' Samsung HD TV
Touch screen capability
Internal memory, with a slot for a memory card too
Convenient small size, and comfortable to use
Ability to connect easily to HD TV for viewing, or to a stand alone DVD recorder for recording onto a DVD
Quick and easy uploading of video from the camcorder to your computer
Choices of different quality HD settings and if you wish, an SD setting

Dislikes:
You have to manually open and close the lens cover
For some reason, when I set the date and time it gets messed up (I don't know why, and I'm doing it correctly. I just hope it doesn't continue to be a problem, as I like to have the date on a recording)
Manual is on a CD to upload on your computer (there is a quick guide booklet). Give me a manual in a book anytime.
Problems with the sound recording - must have an automatic level record function for audio, and it 'spikes' at times making for a very unpleasant listening experience.

Just realize that the higher quality HD recording will use a lot of memory, so although 16 GB is quite a bit of memory, somewhere down the line, you may want to purchase a memory card, especially if you record in the better HD setting. Also, if you have a DVD recorder (stand alone), it will not record in HD. You will get a nice picture, but not full HD quality. The picture will still be far superior to a standard definition camcorder. I don't think your computer DVD recording will do the HD either. So, your best picture will be from viewing from the camcorder to your TV, or uploading on your computer and watching on your computer monitor. Anything I record onto a DVD, I plan on saving on my computer if I want to watch it in full HD.

I did a lot of research online before choosing this HD camcorder. It's nearly impossible to find an HD camcorder that is perfect, and is reasonably priced (I really didn't want to spend $800-$1500). Every possible choice seemed to have some drawbacks, or bad reviews. That being said, while not perfect, this Samsung HD camcorder offers quite a bit of value for it's price tag.

UPDATE - Well, in spite of the superior HD video quality on this camcorder, I decided to send it back. The audio problem just wasn't acceptable, especially because I video events, like my daughter's school concerts, my own band's performances, etc., in which audio is important too. I've decided to go with a Sony, because I've owned Sony camcorders in the past and the audio was always very good.

5AWESOME CAMERA FOR AMAZING PRICE!  Nov 26, 2010
By Nicholas Collette "Alchemy-Illuminated_com"
I bought this camera brand new from QVC and it's incredible! You simply can't find full HD quality camera at this price anywhere! And Samsung is amazing as always with the added features. People who aren't getting 100% satisfaction from this camera probably didn't read the instruction manual on the CD and didn't enable the enhanced features, like super fine video recording and ultra sharp pictures. I haven't had any of the problems these other people are talking about in their reviews, so I guess I'm just lucky. My camera works like a dream and for the guy who complained about the video being to good for DVD -- that's why they have Blue-Ray disks now! duh! Just buy a blue-ray disk burner for your desktop and you can enjoy full quality cinema like movies from this camera!

This same camera is sold in 3 different versions with nothing changing except the memory. One has no internal memory, another has 16GB (this one) and another has 32GB but the extra cost isn't worth it. This is the best one of the 3 by far when it comes to price. And the battery is small so it doesn't last long, but you can buy the ia-bp420e battery which is double the size and adds double the length of time for recording!

Also some people probably don't realize that the default zoom for the camera is only 20x because it's set to optical zoom for best video quality. It also goes up to 200x zoom when you enable digital zoom, and it has a mark on the bar that shows you when you've gone past the optical zoom and the video quality is lowering since it's just a digital zoom beyond that. Problem with digital zoom is that it doesn't have image stabilization like the optical zoom, so it's impossible to use without a tripod to hold the camera still. But the optical image stabilization works perfectly, yet it's not enable by default for some reason. There is a quick access button to turn it on though, right on the side of the camera. When you zoom in all the way, it takes a second after you let go of the zoom for image stabilization to kick in, then it just flows nice and smooth even if you're shaking a little bit.

This camera is just a dream come true because finally I'm able to afford a camera that takes full HD video and photos double the resolution of HD video! You can also take a still photo out of any video when watching the videos on the camera! It has many awesome features, and enables you to plug it in while keeping it recording so you don't have to rely on batteries if you're doing long recording like time lapse or ghost hunting videos. Also works in very low light! Puts every other camera to shame that I've ever used! I LOVE THIS CAMERA! And Sony has nothing on Samsung!

And there's nothing wrong with the audio on my camera! Just make sure you don't put your finger over the mike on the top!

5Excellent first camcorder  Jun 18, 2010
By Palexr
Bought this camcorder to capture my little daughter's early years and it does that perfectly. We have just returned from a 10 day holiday, the quality is excellent. I experienced no problems whatsoever in terms of audio.

The manual is on a CD, but there is a printed quickstart guide.

This is our first camcorder, but that doesn't mean I have never used others. The Samsung is just very easy to use, point and click and it works, no fuss.

As I mentioned, the audio is fine, no spikes or 'electrical' noises. Focus is either via a button on the top of the casing, which zooms in and out pretty fast, or more slowly via the buttons on the side of the screen.

I have no qualms in recommending this product.

4Great camera, but a couple of limitations  Jan 17, 2011
By Thomas A. Hettinger "Tom Hettinger"
Certainly for the price I have no complaints. This is a great camera for 99% of the people that will buy it. I've used this camera, along with a 202, to shoot instructional videos and aerial footage. The fact that the camera stops briefly every 29 minutes or so to transfer data to the flash drive/card hasn't been a problem... and it appears that you don't lose even a frame of action, but it remains a slight concern. My only major issue was with the image stabilization when I tried shooting aerial footage from a weight-shift ultralight trike. If I held the camera in one hand and flew the aircraft with the other, the results were excellent. Unfortunately, I really needed to mount the camera to the airframe to get the viewpoint(s) that I needed... and I definitely need both hands when flying in turbulence. Here's where the image stabilization does not work (and I doubt that any other camera will either). The 5,000 rpm vibration from the engine is transmitted throughout the entire airframe... and through any camera mount (even vibration dampening mounts). The auto-stabilization mode was never intended for this kind of situation, so it's not the camera's fault that it doesn't work. Unfortunately, for me, it presented a major problem... and gyro-stabilized mounts are out of my price range.

I gave it 4 stars because it is an excellent HD camera and the image stabilization is awesome for normal hand-held applications. I've used it with a tripod to shoot some commercial footage with excellent results, so I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone that is looking for HD at a reasonable price. If you're thinking of shooting mostly moto-cross or other high-vibration applications, you'd do well to keep the shipping box until after you've tried the camera as you intend to use it. I still have mine because it meets 90% of my needs and I love it.

2good hd quality, but some "unfinished" problems  Jul 07, 2010
By Cyrax
good beginner camera especially that it can be found for $400. Nice zoom and optical stabilization, excellent sensitivity in twilight.

But gives a feeling of an unfinished product:
- date&time resets on random occasions (support told me that I shake camera too strong, but it happened even when I just closed and then opened screen while camera was on a table) ... seem to happen much more frequently when USB is used

- zoom stick has bad responsiveness when recording at night - camera either ignores me or continues zooming when the stick is released

- the "auto assist" function is buggy - on some conditions camera constantly zooms in and out until power is turned off

- bad compliance with HDMI control (control camera from TV) - only 2 OSD buttons are working (Play and Open Menu), cant navigate by camera menu

- usually during a video playback you can use zoom in/out to either change sound level or ff/rew, but not here
