4great surround sound but, lacking one important feature  Jul 15, 2011
By Ivan
I had this home theater in a box for about a month so far and everything is great, 3D, built in wireless Blu ray player but lacking one important detail. The receiver have 0 Hdmi inputs so if your planning to connect more devices to use the surround sound then you will end up using Toslink cables. I am happy with my purchase and if this receiver had 2 or more Hdmi inputs then 5 stars across the board. If you want the rear wireless speakers to be wireless the Wireless transmitter are sold seperatly if that is a deal breaker or not. great sound, deep base. So far loving it despite the lack of Hdmi inputs.

4Everything In One  Sep 11, 2011
By Legnadibrom
All you need in one system, just connect it to a TV and you're all set for a great home theater experience. I use this with a 46 inch Samsung LCD TV that I purchased a few weeks before this system. Initially I chose the TV because it has DLNA media sharing capabilities so I can stream all my shows and movies from my computer in my bedroom out to my comfy recliner in the living room. Then I tried watching a DVD on that TV with an old Sony player from 2004 to not very good results. So I decided to upgrade to Blu-Ray and went with this all-in-one package. Without disappointment.

I stayed in the same brand family mainly because the TV was really great, plus the DLNA feature that Samsung implements in their Smart-devices is the future of media sharing and Samsung seems to be one of the only big brands to embrace the technology. Samsung's Anynet feature is also a great reason for getting a TV and player within this family because it simplifies quality settings, amongst other things like turning on/off with each other.

As far as all the good things go - the picture looks great, both DVDs and Blu-rays look awesome and after some tweaking with the sound settings I have a healthy dose of bass and clear mid and high range. The audio setup wizard worked well with the detection mic and you can then adjust distance and volume for each speaker as desired...I pumped the subwoofer all the way up. 5.1 sound from Blu-rays is satisfying and the "3D" sound set on HIGH recreates surround sound for downloaded TV shows and movies streaming from my computer through DLNA, as well as older DVDs with only stereo sound. I've sampled music/radio on the player and it sounds fantastic, especially with the built-in sound presets which can mimic sound halls/live venues/etc. and you can turn a song on the radio into something you'd be hearing in a club or a bar...but I tend to just use the player for videos.

I didn't have any problems with the hookup of any speakers and the length of all wires was more than sufficient for my apartment-size living room. I tried the HDMI hookup with return audio so that I could still stream content to my TV and let the player handle the audio but I didn't get it to work right away, and having an optical cable handy I just plugged that in with perfect results, therefore never fiddling with any settings to get the return audio to work.

A couple of cons about the player(but for the price and vs. the pros, these are very minor) are that the player does not handle MKV files, the container choice for most HD videos...which I find odd because my TV handles them without issues, and the two devices are from the same series. I was hoping there would be a firmware update for the player to correct this but so far nothing...so I just stream MKV files to the TV, using the player for the audio. Another oddity is that the player's on screen menu/browser for DLNA doesn't show as many files onscreen at one time as the TV, and the delay for scrolling/button pressing is a tad more for the player. One last thing about the difference between the player and the TV when it comes to DLNA sharing is that the TV takes advantage of those ABCD buttons on the remote and if you're resuming a previously-watched video it will instruct you to press one of those letters to resume where you left off(very convenient) while the player does not offer the option. Oh, and there's no headphone jack on the player so you can't chill out at 4am watching "Lethal Weapon" on Blu-ray without waking your neighbors.

The remote is semi-universal in that you can control your Samsung TV with it if you choose to. I've all but abandoned the TV remote for the player's remote instead. A small quibble with the remote would be that the "source" button is at the top of the remote and it'd be much more comfortable if it were in the remote's mid-section. And also when you press "source" it cycles through whatever sources might be hooked up to the player, whether there's a connection or not, whereas the Samsung TV pops up a transparent window where you can then choose a source instead of cycling through...IMHO much better functionality on the latter.

As far as the online content/features go I've used them maybe 6 times just to try them out or out of boredom more than anything. Yeah, it's kind of cool to watch youtube videos on a big TV in your living room but it's maybe 10 minutes of entertainment at best. I don't care much for facebook or any of the other "widgets" or "gadgets" or whatever they call them in their "app" store. I'm still waiting for a firmware update that includes a web browser, because then I think it'd be something that I might use a bit more than once a month out of bored curiosity. You also have to register for Samsung's SmartTV online thingie plus the actual apps themselves which deterred me from even trying anything like Netflix or Blockbuster online. Why bother signing up for something when you can just download it on your computer and stream it to your player?

I'm very satisfied with this home theater entertainment system and I'd recommend it to anyone that wants a great-sounding basic system that includes pretty much everything you need at a budget price.

5All-in-One 3d Blue Ray Home Theater System  Jul 28, 2011
By 06ajtayl
This product is designed and functions very well! The look of the product is very black and glossy, giving a clean and modern feel. I bought this item for the HDMI Auido return Channel, which after a little messing around with works great!! One cable from the TV to the Reciever gives sound from stereo for all items hooked to the TV or visa versa. No clutter!! (Must use HDMI v1.4 plugs and cables in order to get ARC functionality, my bad). When hooked to a CEC, Anynet+, or compatible DNLA devise through HDMI this unit auto sync's all functions to TV, ie. put in a blue ray, tv turns itself on, turns to the correct input, and starts up the movie. Also, comes with an ipod dock which charges the Ipod, WHEN THE STEREO IS ON (be better if it charged all the time) but gives great control over sound thought IPod's controls OR through the TV, I like searching through songs on the TV through the Ipod better. Th touch controls are super cool and eliminate the look of buttons (kinda like a dishwasher with no buttons on the front) However, have accidently bumped up against controls and turn the unit on or off a few times. So, not so good if in the reach of small children, but should have a 3d blue ray player in the reach of children anyway. Paid $299.00 free shipping no tax through Amazon, cheapest anywhere. All other places $379.00 at best. I would buy again in a heart beat from amazon, customer service is A+. Really when they mean no hassle returns, they are for real.

4Shortcomings yes - HDM'S  Oct 05, 2011
By Armando
I had no problem installing the system. The rear speakers work well wireless, (with wireless receiver module). Smart hub and AllShare work OK with wireless network. Sound good: surround and Dolby Prologic II OK. I like the little system. Good for my bedroom. Price of it is coming down quick. Today I can but it for $100 Dlls less than I paid 2 months ago and I purchased it for $100 less than original.

2A bit disappointed.  Jan 06, 2012
By Ray Shaver "bankshot"
A couple years ago, I bought a similar system HT-Z310 for my family room. It was just a dvd player though, but for $250 dollars gave incredible sound with nice base. I assumed that this HT-D5500 with a Blueray would be the same experience for my living room where I decided to upgrade my entertainment system. As soon as I got the speaker and sub out of the box, I became worried as I noticed that they are quite a bit lighter and cheaper feeling than the older system speakers and sub.

Well, the sound turned out to be very disappointing with hardly any base. The center channel gives cheapish sounding voices. Now granted, my living room isn't set up as nice as the family room for a system like this, but I really expected more than this. Hopefully I can improve the sound as I continue to play with different speaker positions and settings. If not, I may have to return it. It seems to me that Samsung added lots of feature at the expense of speaker quality. I would rather have it the other way around.
