Great picture but text more difficult Jan 12, 2011
By Kearney J. Taaffe I recently purchased this monitor to augment my HP 2009m. I liked the resolution of 1600x900 because the 2009m is the same resolution, their height is about the same (the BX2031 is about 3/4" taller) and about the same size.
What initially attracted me to the BX2031 was the beautiful picture it has.
I'm a webdeveloper, so colors are a little important to me, as is the ability to read HTML code all day.
When I first plugged the BX2031 into my Mac Mini (new Spring 2010 model via HDMI to DVI) I noticed the default background screen ("Aurora") was so much more vidid than the HP2009m's screen.
However, after opening up several web pages, 2 things became clear rather quickly.
1) The BX2031 does not display browns as well as the HP 2009m (not that important but it was noticeable, the browns looked a bit faded)
2) Text around 12 pt was not as crisp as the HP2009m especially when highlighted.
I noticed the browns didn't quite match up when I was looking at pictures of lattice pies. You know, the criss crossing dough pattern on pies.
Yes, to my surprise the monitor that displays purples, greens, and blues so amazingly, looks a little washed out when showing the golden brown crust of pies.
Overcast pictures from San Diego beaches also looks considerably better on the HP2009m than the BX2031. However, close ups of flowers and grasses on the beach turned out better on the BX2031 than the 2009m (even the brown sand looked brighter and more crisp).
After 4 hours of use, typing at a MySQL terminal and modifying HTML code, I realized that smaller text was a little fuzzy. Even setting the contrast to 100 and increasing the sharpness to 98 did not produce as clear a text as the HP2009m, which is disappointing as the BX2031 is much brighter.
I've only had the monitor 1 day, so I don't know if I'll keep it yet. It excels in some areas and falls in others.
I feel the menus are intuitive as can be. I was able to navigate the menus almost immediately. Seeing the writing on the bottom can be a little difficult if you're not right at eye-level, and it's possible (since the buttons are touch sensitive) to accidentally press both the + and - buttons simultaneously.
PROS Beautiful purples, blues, greens, and oranges incredibly bright when watching a movie I noticed no blurring very thin, the power brick is tiny too does not get hot (the brick gets a little warm)
CONS Dark reds and browns seem a little faded or washed out Text is not as sharp as the HP2009m especially when highlighted Adjusting the tilt is a little difficult At 100% brightness, it's almost too bright
NOTES Menu's were intuitive to navigate but the buttons were difficult to read if you were not at eye level
text around 24 pt looked great, even when highlighted. It was around the 14 pt font range that text began to look blurry
