5Polk Soundbar IHT 3000 w/ Wireless Sub Woofer wi fi problem  Oct 05, 2010
By Eileen M. Plunkett
Originally I bought a Boston Acoustics Soundbar (see explanation below for returning it) but now I have the Polk Soundbar and love it. I found one major problem with setup. I am a wi fi household and the wireless subwoofer had a conflict with my network wi fi. I am not terribly knowledgeable about routers but after going to Cnet forums got the answer which I would like to share with you. My problem was I have a Roku box and I was unable to stream. It would begin and then stop. If I turned off the soundbar it worked perfectly. I put the sub woofer in various places based on Polk's instructions, trying to shield it from the wi fi signal but nothing worked. The answer turned out to be very simple. (I had even gone so far as to buy a new router which also didn't work for reasons which will become obvious if you continue reading.) All I had to do was bring up my router's configuration screen and change the channel setting. The Soundbar was set for channel one as was my wi fi. I first tried channel five and it almost worked but after a few minutes, it stalled again so I then changed to channel 11 the farthest and last choice and bingo, it worked great and continues to work great.

I live in a 1400 sq ft house and the living room is about 12' x 20'. This unit is actually a little too much for the size of the room but when I made the necessary changes in my tv sound setup and the Dish remote setup, it made a big difference. Sometimes the sound was shrill so I changed the treble and bass settings on my tv and they do work for the soundbar even when you are not using the tv sound which I found I don't really need. For music this soundbar is astounding. For speech it is excellent. I do have a hearing problem and since Netflix has no subtitles yet, I do need some help. My tv is an LG 55" LED and the sound is ok but this soundbar has solved our problems when watching a streaming Netflix movie. I also stream Leo LaPorte which is TWIT.tv and for him I don't need the soundbar because the sound is so clear but I still use it. The other night we watched a very old, 61 years, movie called Impact using the Polk soundbar and could hear every word clearly!!

Programming my Dish TV remote was simple so I only use the Polk remote when I want to change the sub woofer if it is just too much bass.

All in all, I love this unit. I have it standing on the cabinet in front of my tv with the sub woofer on the floor beside it. You can get even better bass if you put the sw in a corner of the room. I think it would be great even for a very large room since I sometimes have to turn it way down for some programs. For music, again, fantastic. Of course, you will be forced to turn it down for commercials, just can't solve that issue.

When I was listening to the Boston A and the Polk bars, I really thought that the Boston A was better because I was unable to adjust the sub woofer on the Polk. The salesman told me it had no controls on it, well, he was wrong, I can control it so you can set it any way you choose. After having the Polk for a month I feel it is ALMOST as good as the Boston A and since the Boston A only has audio out RCA jacks I couldn't buy it anyway.

This brings me to another very important point when shopping for any soundbar which is to be sure what your tv accomodates. (I suggest you download your TV manual and take the pages you need with you, showing what audio out jacks you have.) My tv, the LG, does NOT accomodate RCA jacks for audio out, only optical out. Remember, I had originally bought a Boston Acoustics soundbar and had to return it. Because I had to go back three times Best Buy agreed to sell me the Polk for $301, the same price I paid for the Boston Acoustics bar. I also could not get the enclosed optical cord to work but fortunately had bought one years ago which works great. The enclosed one is very thin and the one I had is much thicker, don't know if that was the reason. Optical cables are very difficult to insert so don't lose hope, eventually you will be successful.

Since many people lambast BB, I want to say that when I returned the first Boston unit, (it had obviously been returned by someone and I thought it was defective) they apologized and said I should have been charged the open box price ($269) so brought out another open box, which was sealed and had a big label saying Open Box on it. He opened it up and set it up and thinking he had confirmed that I had a headphone jack I could use, I bought it. Well, as luck would have it, no headphone jack on my LG and no optical on the Boston unit, why I cannot figure out. He went to a lot of trouble for so low a priced unit and I appreciated his effort. When I returned it again, he actually tried to avoid me, knowing that I would take up a lot of his time. As I understand it, BB sales people get bonuses at the end of the month based on sales so even though they don't get commissions as many other electronics stores, if still in existence, pay, they do make money on their sales. The higher their number, the more they get. But he did come over, finally, when I tracked him down and once again, brought out the soundbar and set it up to check. So kudos to Best Buy, San Rafael, this particular sales guy and to Polk.

2amazing sound but a wifi killer  Jan 25, 2011
By Jeremy A.
I was interested an alternate to the built in tv speakers for my bedroom. I wanted the enhanced sound; however, I did not want to have to run wires for the speakers/subwoofer, like I did in my living room. I didn't need a full 5 or 7.1 setup for the room, so I thought the Polk IHT 3000 surroundbar, and its wireless subwoofer, would be a great option. I went to my local big box store to play with the options, and to test the sound quality before I purchased. The sound is very crisp and the subwoofer does its job very well. Initially I was very satisfied after I received the item. The setup was very simple, and it sounded just as good in my home as I had tested on the demo unit; watching a dvd was perfect. However, the majority of media consumption in my bedroom is internet based: music streaming from my home server to my htpc, hulu, netflix streaming on my roku. I have an N/2.4 ghz wireless router and when using the Polk IHT 3000, my wifi connection was useless. All wifi traffic would come to a complete stop. The only way to solve the problem was to unplug the surroundbar. Once it was unplugged, all the wifi traffic would resume as normal. I read through some of the other customer's comment and found that other users suggested changing the channels on both the router and the subwoofer, so that they do not overlap, as a solution. I tried every possible channel configuration on both the router and subwoofer, and repositioning the wifi router and subwoofer. Nothing made any difference. As soon as the surroundbar was turned on, no data could be transmitted on my wireless network. As soon as it was turned off, all traffic would resume again. I do not have one of the newer 5 ghz routers to test it with, so this may not be a problem when used in conjunction with newer networking hardware, or if everything in your home is hardwired via ethernet. If all you are using the surroundbar exclusively for is television, dvd, or bluray I think it is an excellent choice. However, I would not recommend it to used in a home with only a 2.4 ghz wifi network.

5Great for its application  Sep 15, 2010
By T. C. Woods "tcwfalcon"
I have a fairly large living room, and this system has more than enough power for the space. It installs relatively easy and there are no settings to mess with (or up). I spent time shopping around a reading reviews before i purchased this system, picking this over the Yamaha soundbar(no wireless sub, and the proprietary cable is only 13 ft, so it would be a pain for me to try to splice into it and lengthen it). However, the system is relatively new, and there were a lack of reviews, so I just went with the Polk name and wasn't disappointed. In summary, if you're looking for a nice upgrade to your tv speakers, this is it. If you're looking for a true "surround-sound" system, i would look somewhere else.

5Unreasonably good sound for the size and price!!!!  Jul 29, 2010
By Cancrippler
This little unit is surprisingly good. This is great for someone who expects movie theater sound to go along with their big plasma or lcd. This slim soundbar can be mounted above or below your tv, and even attached to it with the novel brackets from [...] or can be purchased here on Amazon. Soundbar Brackets Universal Soundbar Bracket This little unit gives me details I missed with my Jamo 5.1 system attached to a Harman Kardon receiver I had before. The Wireless sub pounds bass that shouldn't be possible for a 6.5" woofer. If everyone heard this unit, I suspect it would become the new standard in home audio. There must be some Bose style DSP trickery or acoustic management going on, because this style of big movie theater sound shouldn't be possible from such a modest system. You will get a lot of ambient sounds from this unit, but not much surround originating from the back. It kinda seems that it projects sound forward into the room so that there is quite a bit of a 3 dimensional quality to the sound. I cheated and placed my wireless sub behind me, because I could. I'm running a wireless N network in the same room, and there is no interference with it. There are 4 channels to choose from. Buy this and try it in your home. Even my wife begrudgingly admitted it was pretty awesome the first time I plugged it in and fired up a movie. Great sound and great Wife Acceptance Factor. If the remote sensor was a little more sensitive, this would be absolutely perfect.

4Polk 3000 Soundbar  Nov 08, 2011
By DKT "Don"
I initially purchased the Vizio VHT510 from Costco (amazing price: $290). The Vizio is probably much better sounding than the Polk, mainly because it's not just a bar; it's 5.1 surround sound, with not only a wireless subwoofer, but two rear (not wireless) speakers as well. But it's Achilles' heal is the length (39.75") of the bar. The back wall of my 17' x 13' family room consists of a 6.5' wide floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace, on either side of which are bookshelves with large bottom cabinets. My 46" Samsung TV sits on top of the left cabinet. I have not seen a sound bar that would fit between the stand and the TV, so needed one that would fit on one of the shelves above the TV. Problem is, my shelves are only 38" wide, so the Vizio would not fit there, either. I toyed with the idea of mounting the bar high on the fireplace, but that would have been a lot of work; I'd have to use conduit to cover the wires from there to the TV and power source; mounted there, it would probably be outside my Comcast remote's beam (I wanted to program everything to turn on/off, control the sound, mute, etc. from that remote); and "madam" would have a hissy-fit over the aesthetics. So the Vizio got returned and I bought the Polk 3000 from HHGregg - for about the same price ($280). The Polk bar is only 31", so fits easily on the shelf.

Setting up and programming the Polk 3000 was easy. Not only did I have no worry about where to mount it, run wires thru conduit, etc., the bar makes it easy to program to work with the remote you use for your TV/DVR. It has a "Learn" button that allows you to do that relatively quickly. However, Polk's instructions are not very explicit, so I had to figure it out myself. For anyone having trouble with Polk's programming instructions, you have to teach the bar to recognize 4 separate remote operations: power on, mute, volume up and volume down. The part that took me a minute or so to understand is that you have to teach it "volume down" separate from "volume up". Once you understand that, it's easy and it works perfectly. But one aspect of the Polk bar I don't like is that the learned settings are stored in DYNAMIC ram, not STATIC ram. What this means is that (a) the bar must draw power even when it's off (I'm guessing that other bars do, too) and (b) if you have a power outage, even momentary, it loses the settings; you have to teach it again. I discovered this accidentally when, after initially doing the teaching process, I had to unplug it to run the wires a little differently. After plugging it back in, the bar no longer responded to the Comcast remote.

As to how it sounds. . . well, it's a lot better than the TV speakers. But its name aside, it is NOT surround sound. Like others have reported, the subwoofer can be "boomy" and from day 1, I found myself having to turn the volume down on the subwoofer when some ads come on, or for scenes where it makes it more difficult to hear speech, then back up after the ads are over. Not only is this annoying, but you can only do it with the Polk remote; there's no "subwoofer volume control" on any TV remote that I know of.

I'm going to mention something that I haven't seen in any other review that I consider important to readers of reviews of sound equipment - the reviewer's age. I'm in my early '70s, so my high frequency hearing is severely diminished. If you're under 50, the Polk bar will undoubtedly sound different to you than it does to me. When frequency controls are available on a sound device, I usually have to increase the treble significantly to hear the music the way it was intended to be heard. Unfortunately, while the Polk bar provides a subwoofer volume control, it provides no mid- or high frequency volume control. But just yesterday I discovered a way that gets at least partly around that shortcoming and may be helpful for older users to know, and that is keeping the TV's speakers on. My TV provides an equalizer for the TV speakers and I assume most other brands do, too. I set the 10kHz equalizer range (the highest settable range) up significantly, and the 3kHz range up somewhat. I then changed my TV sound setting back from "External speakers" to "TV speakers". Doing so does not shut off the soundbar, so I now have both the soundbar and the TV putting out sound. Using the Polk remote, I muted the soundbar, set the TV speakers at a comfortable decibel level, then took the mute off the soundbar and again using the Polk remote, raised it's volume until I had what sounded like a good mix of both. Using the volume control on the Comcast remote raises and lowers the soundbar and the TV speakers simultaneously. I find that this is a great way to add more mid-to-high frequency to the output of the overall system.

Re the problems some have had with the Wi-Fi connection between the bar and subwoofer, I have none. I have a router in the house that connects my desktop and laptop to the Internet, and a wireless printer used by those computers and by guests with laptops. It did not cause a connection problem with the bar, nor did the bar's signal interfere with the computer connections. It may not have caused a problem because my router uses automatic channel switching (uses the channel that encounters the least interference from other devices). For all I know, it may switch channels when the sound bar is on. If your router does not have this feature, you may have to manually try different channels to see what works.

Update 11/12/11: The idea of having both the Polk bar and the TV speakers on to get a bit more mid-to-high frequencies turns out to cause another problem. Apparently there is a few nanoseconds delay in the sound coming from the Polk vs. that coming from the TV speakers. It causes a slight "echo" effect, which can at times be annoying. So I've gone back to turning the TV speakers off. Might not happen with your TV, so you still might want to try it.

Update 11/30/11: I mentioned above that the soundbar apparently stored its "learned" settings from your TV remote in dynamic, memory, not static memory. Have to eat crow on that. Don't know why it lost the settings the first time I unplugged it, but just yesterday I had to unplug it again to switch the receptacle. I expected to have to re-teach it, but to my surprise, after plugging everything back in, I hit the "All On" button on the Comcast remote and everything -- including the soundbar -- came on, and the soundbar volume was still controlled by the Comcast remote. So, it now appears that the memory IS STATIC, not dynamic. My apologies for the error.
