4Wooden play food  Aug 18, 2010
I bought this for my little niece to use with her kitchen set. As she gets older I'm happy to think she'll also learn her food groups by using the little wooden crates to separate the food into. So far she is delighted with playing "make-believe" shopping and cooking with them. I would recommend this product whole-heartedly.

4Cute food  Aug 11, 2010
I bought this food set after seeing it at a friends house to go with our new kidcraft kitchen. I really like it. So do the kids. The only one I really don't understand is the orange. It just looks like an orange ball. It would be nice if it had a little dimple or a green stem painted on it. Like another reviewer my kid just likes to throw it like a ball. We took that one away.

5Nice Play Food  Jul 20, 2010
I got these for my 2 1/2 year old son. We've had these for several weeks and I have had no problems with them. No paint has chipped off (which I keep checking for since several reviews mention chipped paint) and I am very surprised the little wooden crates are still intact.

My only complaint is regarding the orange. It's just a wooden ball painted orange. It doesn't have a texture nor does it have any detail that would mark it as an orange. The Tomato is a similar shape but has the leafy detail to distinguish it. Many times my son simply calls it a ball or an orange ball. True, the recommended age is a few months older than he is, but he does know most of the other fruits and veggies in the set and this one isn't detailed enough, in my opinion.

The sizes are smaller than life size, so if you're looking for life sized pretend food this is probably not for you. I haven't had an issue with the smaller size since it makes it perfect for his little hands and, aside from the orange, they are detailed enough that there is no mistaking what they are.

Many of the other reviewers also mentioned that they are dangerous/not appropriate for their children. Most of them also mentioned the age of their child being way under the suggested age. It clearly states that it's for 3 year olds and older. The solid wooden pieces are definitely dangerous for kids who still throw stuff or drop stuff constantly. And if your child still puts things in their mouths constantly, then I am sure the paint will chip off much quicker.

wow, i got this for my almost-2-yr-old.

just now, she was licking it for a few minutes and the paint came off!!

5Food Groups  Mar 28, 2010
My three year old is having a lot of fun with the food groups. We cook with the food, go grocery shopping, sort the food and I love how the food stores in the crates that they come in. We love Melissa & Doug products and this is no exception.
