False advertising on Maxtor website Dec 05, 2007
By Tim I had purchased this after reviewing the info on the Maxtor website. It showed this specific model and when you watched the flash demo it showed the 'safety drill' software for backing up the computer's operating system, which is what I needed.
Unfortunately, that was not included! I found this out after purchasing and looking for this software. It was misleading of their website to imply this is included, when it isn't. You have to buy the 'plus' version to get this, but their website flash demo never mentions this fact.

data loss and file corrupted Aug 16, 2008
By Clyde T. Nieh Within one month of purchase, the unit crapped out. Some folders cannot be open at all. Other folders, all the stored files were gone. The loss files will be really hard to replace, since I did not have additional backup for the backup. Maxtor OneTouch 4 Lite 500 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive This is not a reliable storage unit. I will not to store any more file to this unit from now on.

Hardware is fine, but software has problems and may cause you to loose data Dec 11, 2008

I bought a OneTouch II drive new a couple years ago in order to use it as my backup drive for my laptop. I've done consistent backups over the last couple years and generally am able to fit about 8-10 restore points on the drive. I purchased it so that if my laptop hard drive ever died, I would be able to easily recover my data.
Well this was a mistake. After my laptop's hard drive died, 3 days have passed and I am still not able to restore my data. One problem is that I could not just download the software and driver's from Maxtor's website (which is now owned by Seagate). If I do that it just shows up as 'Unlicensed' and nothing works.
First I have to find my old CD that came with the drive and install that software. This software doesn't work because it just hangs there saying 'Updating status...' which their website is a known issue. The answer is to upgrade to Retrospect Express HD 1.1 (from 1.0). So I download that and install it. And it still says 'Unlicensed' and nothing works.
Then their support gives me some OneTouch4-Lite program that they tell me I can use to restore my data. But after I uninstall Retrospect Express HD and install OneTouch4-Lite, I find out that it only supports NTFS. Of course being a couple years old, it shouldn't be a surprise that my drive stores my backups as FAT (the default that came with the drive when I got it).
So far something that should have been a fairly trivial task has turned into a nightmare. It seems like things are too unstable at Maxtor/Seagate due to whatever merging and such they are doing. Support for old products appears to be poor at best. I don't know anyone that has purchased a USB backup drive and only expected it to last for 1 year though! The whole idea is that the drive and the software should continue to work for many years!
So lessons learned: 1) Keep the original CD. 2) Find some other backup software and don't rely on what is provided by Maxtor/Seagate, at least not Retrospect Express (was Dantz, then EMC).

Worst external drive ever Mar 05, 2010
By lunaturk Maxtor should trash this design and refund all who beta tested it for them with their own money. I barely used the first one and it failed. Had it replaced through warranty, lo and behold! that one failed as well after minimal use. Save yourself the headache and your hard earned cash. Stay away from this one.

Piece of Crap May 15, 2009

Ok, I don't write a lot of reviews and the one's I have written have pushed the positives and negatives of a product (a.k.a. I try to be fair). However, I have had enough of Maxtor.
My story is CompUSA was going out of business and I decided to pick up a bunch of hard drives. Based on reputation I bought three 500 GB Maxtor One Touch 4 drives and a Maxtor 1 TB One Touch. All four drives have failed in under a year!!!!!!!!! I sent two drives back to Maxtor and they failed too. Making 6 failed hard drives in about 18 months (it took the returned drives about 6 months to go bad.)
The drives have not traveled they were used as back ups for pictures and videos and were not abused. I used to by Maxtor all the time, but my opinion of them has dropped to the point where if given a drive for free I would refuse ... my data is just to valuable.
Don't waste your money on Maxtor or its parent company Seagate. Oh and I would have given negative stars if I could have.
