5Good set  Dec 23, 2007
By S. Corder
This is a great starter set for my 2 year old boy. It has enough track to make a full circle, 2 train pieces (Spencer the engine and a car), a few lego duplo pieces, and Sir Topham Hatt. The train comes apart so you can build other trains/cars/trucks on the wheels, which my son just loves. We also got some more legos, and straight and curved track pieces, and he plays with it for hours on a daily basis. The tracks don't always stay together on really plush carpet, but you can connect them with flat lego pieces to solve that problem. Overall a great little train set.

5Fun with Spencer  Mar 20, 2010
By Marsh Dweller
We got the Thomas the Tank Duplo starter set for our two and a half year old son at Christmas. He enjoyed it so much we decided to get the Spencer set too. The chunky pieces are perfect for small hands. Our son enjoys taking the trains apart and putting them back together. He and his dad have lots of fun playing trains together. It's a little on the expensive side but it's paid itself off in entertainment value. One snag - the Spencer kit does not contain an instruction booklet so you are forced to keep the box so that you know how to put all the components together. That's a bit of a nuisance.

4Duplo Spencer  Sep 16, 2008
By HK
Spencer is another quality Duplo, just like the others in the series. My boys were thrilled to get Sir Topham Hatt. The only difficulty is that if you want to build the set exactly as pictured, there is no separate directions to clue you in. We search all over the box to find pictures that accounted for all the pieces. All in all, a nice set at a good price considering the tracks are included.

3Axle squeals and front hitch is a problem. Go for Thomas, Percy, or Toby instead.  Sep 23, 2010
By Parent
The axles have an annoying squeal and the front hitch is inaccessible because the train face hangs over the front. Go for the Thomas, Percy, or Toby instead. James is nice looking, but it suffers from the same front hitch problem as Spencer. On the whole, the Thomas brand duplo train sets are our all time #1 toy.

3Squeeky and awkward hitch. Go for Thomas, Toby, or Percy instead.  Sep 23, 2010
By Parent
We have a bunch of the Thomas brand Duplo trains and tracks. The Spencer train is by far the most annoying because it squeeks loudly when the axle turns and the front hitch is awkward because the train face hangs over the top of the hitch. Our kids prefer the Thomas, Percy, and Toby. James is good, but also has the same front hitch problem as Spencer.
