5JVC CD Deck with USB  Nov 03, 2006
By Paul Ferlan
I purchased this deck mostly for the USB port located in the front - and it's the most useful thing that I've seen in a car stereo deck in quite a while. I love just being able to load some MP3's on a thumb drive and pop it into the USB port, bringing it back to the computer and changing the MP3's whenever I feel like it without burning a CD each time. It only recognizes one level of folders within the main directory, so don't bury any songs too deeply or it won't see them. This particular deck plays MP3, WMA, and Ogg Vorbis formats.

The sound of the deck is very good as well - nice and clear with crisp highs and deep lows. Sometimes finding a particular function in the menu system can be a little tricky (Do I just press the "Mode" button, or hold it down for 2 seconds to get to the right menu? Or do I have to hold it down with another button?) But that's kind of par for the course in these days of not many buttons on the front panel. Some of those features are fun! I love being able to change the color of the display for each different type of input (CD, USB, AM, FM). Just have to discipline myself not to change the colors while I'm driving!

In short, love the sound, love the USB port, great deck!

4Awesome player  Jul 16, 2008
By Nathan Flint
I really like this player because of the USB capability and the nice display.

The unit plays usb flash drives formatted with FAT32 and up to 4GB. Being able to drag and drop MP3 from my computer to the drive is nice. The screen has 2 lines of text that show the album/artist and song title. The lines of text scroll and read the ID3 tags from your MP3s.

There is one minor bug that annoys me, the clock does not update sometimes when playing an MP3. The time will 'stick' and not change for several minutes. I noticed it happens when the song title/album text is not long enough to cause it to visually scroll. The problem can be easy worked around by entering the menu and exiting (press SEL button twice). This will update the clock and work around the problem.

I suggest using only the smalled usb drives because big long usb drives will stick way out and get bumped/jammed damaging the USB slot and/or usb drive.

Pros:
Plays MP3s from 4GB USB flash drives
USB slot is on front of unit
Good display shows full ID3 tags
Good sound quality
Fun backgrounds/animations can be uploaded via a burned CD
Has volume knob (volume buttons suck)
Very customizable

Cons:
Clock bug
USB drive can come lose
Big usb drives stick out like a sore thumb and if bumped can cause damage
Folder order is arbitrary/random but consistent when playing MP3's from USB/CD
Menus are unintuitive to navigate: Takes great effort to use the right combination of arrows, knobs and select button to navigate the menus.

3Worth the money, Some problems  Apr 07, 2008

Great product for the money but..... USB connection fails the read sometimes, and skip protection when using a cd is fair. I would still consider buying another one for my girlfriend's car though.

The clock does not display when the car is on and the radio off.

The clock does not keep time when using the USB, the clock is displayed and blinks like it is working but it does not keep time
