Dolphin Diagnostic Aug 23, 2010 Pros: cleans well, reliable, low maintenace, no pumps or plumbing
Cons: heavy to remove from pool, only fair on steps, cleaning bag minor hassle
"we have a 30x45 rock pool with a large deep end-11.5ft max depth. I have only used manual vac. once in 3 years. i use the dolphin year round, summer and winter. it cleans well, cimbs walls until heavy with debris, and filters water. cleaning the bag is a minor hassle but takes only 10 or 15 minutes, then the unit is back in action and will run for 6 hours unless it fills with debris sooner--extreme conditions. we have a few leaves but lots of blowing sand especially in the spring. the only other con than listed above is a poor design on the transformer end of the power cord- it tends to loosen over time but is not terribly difficult to fix."
Short Lifespan Aug 16, 2010 This will be my second dolphin pool cleaner, and I regret to inform you that it's still the same as the first.
The product design and functionality works well as it climbs up to walls while cleaning the pool BUT and that's a capital but, The biggest issue with this product is it's longevity. This new one lasted only 2 years before quitting. I have maintained it and kept it out of the sun the whole time and one day it just stop working. I've used it on weekly basis which means It only worked through 104 times. Very disappointed, will not even attempt to send it to a service center (shipping alone will be more then buying a different product). I will defiantly not recommend this product to any one.
Dolphin is piece of garbage Jun 21, 2010 Had this product for 2 years and then it just died. Didn't do the greatest job cleaning either. Avoid at all cost. What a piece of garbage.
Overall, the performance of my DD had been satisfactory, BUT... Jun 09, 2010 I purchased my DD four years ago, and overall, it worked well. Unlike many other reviewers, I had no problem with the motor. I agree with other users on several items: the unit tends to stay in the deep end; cleaning the filter bag is a pain; no matter how you change the handle position, the cord gets twisted. My other annoyance is when you remove the unit from the pool, debris leaks back into the pool. If you are in the pool, it's a simple matter to turn the cleaner over before lifting it out. However, most times, I would wait until it shuts itself off and snatch it out by the handle. BIG MISTAKE. The plastic housing that the handle is attached to fractured, leaving me holding only the handle. Now the cleaner still functions, but when it tries to climb the wall, it flips over and lands on the pool bottom, upside down, then shuts off. I called Maytronics customer service and was told that they don't sell "internal" parts to customers; they are only available through their approved service centers. They won't quote anything over the phone. They require the customer to ship or drop off the cleaner and power supply for a "diagnosis" even though I know exactly what parts need to be replaced. If the customer decides not to let them repair it (because you could buy a new unit for a few dollars more than the repairs cost) they charge a $100 "bench fee", plus a charge for return shipping. The company's NON-WARRANTY REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS state:
If you fail to make a payment within 2 weeks of the provided estimate, the dolphin will be considered abandoned property and the equipment will become property of the service center.
I wonder how many customers decide that the repairs are too expensive and they don't want to pay $150 to receive their broken equipment back...watch out for "refurbished" Dolphin pool cleaners!!!
DO NOT BUY THIS May 29, 2010 I have owned 2 Dolphins. Bought first about 7 years ago. It was supposed to learn the pool shape and get more efficient at cleaning it - this is not true. It followed, what seemed to be, the same routine every time and quite often the shallow end would be left with debris after 6 HOURS. Contacted Leslies and manufacturer - No help. The wheel belts would come off the tracks more and more frequently and in the end I had to send the unit off for replacement. After 3 years the motor died. I repurchased a new one on-line which was a similar model. We used it for one year then moved house. It took a while for our pool to be built and after we used the dolphin a few dozen times the motor died - and this one is actually relatively unused though the warranty had just run out. Very poor product and customer service. For this much money you'd expect it to perform as advertised and last more then 2-3 years. Looking at the Nitro smart pool cleaner - half the price, YOU can do your own maintenance without shipping it off and the reviews sound good.
