Great device for someone with some tech know how! Dec 03, 2010
By Chad Hensley I've had this device for 6 days and I've been very pleased with all aspects of it. I did a lot of research before buying and it has met all of my expectations. Best for those who already have some experience with the Android operating system.
Here is what I like:
It makes an excellent e-reader. I can use books from Barnes and Noble, Borders, Amazon, Google and my local library. It is a great PDF document reader and works great for comics as well.
It is very good internet browser. Flash capability isn't perfect yet, but having it in even a limited capacity opens up a lot more of the internet. I've been an iPod Touch/iPhone user for several years and I really like this device. The internet experience is superior.
Google integration. If you use Gmail and google apps, Android offers better capabilities than iOS devices. (Note, this does require a hack, but it is very easy to do).
Expandability. MicroSD, HDMI, USB. Archos doesn't control what I can and cannot do with this device.
Video playback. Excellent playback of local, network and internet video.
Form factor. I've played with an iPad and it's a fun device, but I like the size/weight of this device a lot better. It is more practical and easy to take with me. Much easier to hold for long periods of time when reading.
Battery life. Not iPad levels, but still very good.
What I don't like:
Future ability to upgrade. By only putting in 256MB of RAM, they have limited the ability of this device to Android 2.2, which means I will probably want the 2011 version, instead of upgrading this one. (I think they planned this)
Hacking is necessary. Because of limitations that Google puts on Android currently, it is necessary to hack the device to access it's full potential. This will ultimately damage the ability of new/inexperienced users to enjoy their Archos tablets.
Overall, I love this device and if you have used Android or if you are willing to do some research on websites like archosfans.com, you will love it as well!

Pretty Descent for the Price but NEEDS SOME BIG improvements Dec 27, 2010
By Keith M. Thompson I've wanted a tablet for a while now but the price of what was out there discouraged me from buying anything. I bought this tablet as a Christmas gift to my wife but I had to test it out for a couple of weeks to make sure it worked and that it was worth the money to keep it. If you want to get right to the Pros & Cons see below. Bottom line I still think the device is pretty descent overall but there are three large issues for me. 1. Bluetooth tethering does not work at all & Archos doesn't want to do anything to help me trouble-shoot. I will say that most of the time my wife is likely to have wi-fi whereever she would whip this out but that's besides the point 2. Dispite 8GB of internal storage the device only allows 256MB for app installation. this is still a problem even when developers allow their apps to be installed on SD and only a few apps have this feature enabled, and 3. finally I think the tech support is really really sub-par.
I've work in IT for 13 years and I've supported enterprise applications from Microsoft and RIM BlackBerry and everything in between, and I've spoken to tech support for companies of all sizes and Archos is one of the worse I've ever "tried" to get support from. At least they do reply to my tech support tickets but what good is that if they don't try to resolve your problems or they give you this simple one sentence responses like they only know a few English words. Honestly if it wasn't for the affordable price-point I would not recommend this tablet. Out of all of the more affordable Android tablets available now, this is probably the best out there. I think if you are a tech saavy person, then this could definitely be the tablet for you. if you are a regular user and don't have a lot of experience with side-loading apps, and doing tweaks outside of the normal support channel then you probably need to buy an iPad or the Samsung Galaxy Tab since they are more polished and have more User-friendly Interfaces.
Pros - perfect price-point for the spec's your getting for this Android tablet. Since the iPad is way too expensive and the Samsung Galaxy Tab is over-priced, even though its better than the iPad, this price-point is perfect for most working people. Seriously, who can justify buying a $500-$900 tablet and then pay a monthly data plan on top of that for another 2 years??? - bluetooth tethering (if it worked - see cons), capacitive touch screen, est 7-8 hours of battery life (6 hours in real-world usage), 1GHz CPU - Android 2.2 Froyo update is now available and with that comes all of the pros of the Android OS, which is complete customizability, really fast browser with flash, gmail apps (gmail, browser, etc) - Full flash 10.1 support for web - Very Thing & light (thinner & ligther than the iPad & the Samsung Galaxy Tab) - supports all major video & audio formats - great accelerometer - microSD expansion up 32GB - has stock Android so there are no proprietary skins that unecessarily delay deploying new Android updates when they become available. - front-facing camera for video chat (full disclosure, I have not gotten the video chat feature to work. I have been able to connect up with a video call but the video was not coming through. I still need to trouble-shoot that. I tried it with OovoO video client not the built in Fring because I never got Fring working). - user community support forums (archosfans.com) is the best thing out there for support. XDA developers site has a lot of stuff going on for these gen8 Archos tablets. Tech support has not proven to be fruitful at all.
Cons - tech support has not proven to be good at all. In fact I've been getting these one sentence responses from tech support with no real attempt to address or fix my concerns. Their support is sub-standard in my opinion and I wonder if their support people actually understand English as they have very simple and single sentence repsonses to my questions. - BLUETOOTH TETHERING DOES NOT WORK. Despite what they state in their tech spec's bluetooth tether does not work with BlackBerry phones (BB Bold 9700) or any phones that I can determine from reading the support forums. I think some users have hacked their phones to get it to work but with no support from their tech support. When I emailed their tech support to provide me a list of compatible cell phones they they have successfully tested bluetooth tethering with, they told me,"we don't provide any compatibility lists because bluetooth tethering involves 3rd party hardware" I thought he was joking. So does wi-fi connections but it still works when I turn it on without a problem. I'm very upset about that because one of the main reasons I bought the phone is because my wife would be able to extend Internet to the device whle she's out and about." - 802.11n doesn't work. Even after this latest firmware release for their Gen 8 tablets, 802.11n does not work. My tablet only connects a 54Mbps which is 802.11g speeds. The fact that they advertise 802.11n for their device pisses me off because it doesn't connect at 802.11n speeds at all. It's false advertising and they should be forced to take 802.11n off their spec's page if they can't get it to work. - No Full Android Market built-in. I knew this upfront before I bought mine so I was aware of this and this was not a problem to me. Archos has put their own android market on the device and supposedly it's the largest 3rd-party Android markets out there with 10K+ apps but even that's BS. There is an easy hack to put the full Android Market on the device. - Device has some instability issues but it seems like the more I use it the more stable it becomes. I don't know what that's about. I definitely think that will a couple more firmware updates Archos can work out the kinks and the larger bugs in the software-hardware integration. Also the more you use Android & understand the nuiances of the OS, you'll experience problems less & less. - Dispite 8GB of internal storage the device only allocates 256MB for applications. This is apparently a Google Android limitation but since Archos is the OEM, they should have allocated more memory to application installs. It makes no sense that I have this device and I'm getting low space status msgs when I have 6GB+ of available internal storage and 4GB of available space of microSDHC storage. This is big issue to me because this is no better than my Moto Cliq phone I use. I hope that Archos will see how many users are complaining about this and fix this witha furture firmware update. You can get around this a "little" by moving those applications that support it to SD or internal memory.

Finally! A Froyo tablet for under $400 that is worth paying for Dec 05, 2010
By J. Wallen I am writing my review on my 70IT...this tablet, overall, is fantastic. The capacitive touch screen is very responsive and stock applications run fast and are well designed.
PROS
Capacitive touch screen beautiful display. 7inch is good for thumb typing. Froyo (Android 2.2) 1 ghz cpu AND graphics accelerator Built in Wifi and Bluetooth Excellent video and audio playback with a wide range of supported formats Excellent support forum available Can load full android market onto the device (see forum) Very good gsensor Front facing camera for video chatting Support for tethering a cell phone so no need for an extra contract Supports adding on gps via bluetooth Stream music and video from your media server Flash player 10 support (download free from market) HDMI out to TV Comes with USB cable so you can tranfer files from you computer Default music and video player is well designed and easy to use. Good battery life...I watched a full movie from an 80% charge and still had 30%+ battery remaining. *[EDIT] As of Firmware 2.0.71 (Android 2.2.1) you can select between three different levels of performance to adjust your batter usage. A nice addition so that you can lower your cpu speed to conserve battery life if you take your Archos on the go!
CONS
[EDIT: CPU under clocked at 800mhz at the time of this review.] - REMOVED FROM CONS LIST *] Flash is laggy right now but Archos is promising a fix for this, so not too big of a deal. Appslib preloaded has a poor selection of apps and games, but you can install the full market place very easily. Have to pay about $20 extra dollars to get codecs pack if you want to watch videos of certain formats. I was unable to play a video with AAC audio without this codec in the default player No built-in GPS (but could add this with an external bluetooth GPS device) No built-in compass Device tends to get slower the more applications you install. Not much reserved for system storage so you aren't going to be installing 100's of application like they claim. I think it's about 500MB of the 8GB that is reserved for system storage. Fortunately, it does let you move many applications (that support it) to the internal storage. USB doesn't provide enough power for an external hard drive on the 70 but on the 101 it does.

It's All About The Price Dec 01, 2010
By BTX I own the Archos 70 Internet Tablet with Android 2.2 Froyo installed.
I am going to start by listing the three things I hate about this tablet.
1. It only has 256 megabytes of RAM. It really should have 512 megabytes of RAM. (And I would have paid a little more to get twice the RAM.)
2. It does not come with the Android Marketplace App or Google Apps pre-installed. (So, with each update, you have to rely on others to create the Google Apps .apk that you can hunt down and manually install. I did it, of course, but it is a little pain in the butt. And, not all the apps show up in the Marketplace.)
3. It is a fingerprint magnet like you wouldn't believe. The bezel around the screen absorbs oil from your skin like crazy. Keep a wiping cloth handy at all times.
OK, now to the good. I paid just over $250 for this tablet direct from Archos, and at that price, I am satisfied where I give the device 4 out of 5 stars. I like the size and weight (as I found the iPad to be too heavy when holding it for a long time). Battery life is good. The screen is excellent for Internet, email, and video.
Android 2.2 Froyo runs well on my tablet, and I am happy to have Adobe Flash (although not every single Flash Website works...and if you encounter a chat box that runs on Flash, like Chatango, the keyboard does not respond, you cannot chat).
Bottom line: If you want a very good and reasonably-priced 7" WiFi-only tablet right now, the Archos 70 is the one to get. (If you don't need one right now, it is expected there will be many more tablets offered in 2011...and they will have more RAM and a more powerful processor. And yes, I know, they will be more expensive.)

Best color eBook reader as of now + Most cost effective Android tablet Dec 07, 2010
By Steadystate I recently purchased NookColor, but then when I heard Archos just released this one at a similar price point as NookColor, I thought it doesn't make sense not to switch. At the very least, you can just install the Nook app on this device, and it will do everything that NookColor does, plus much more. (i.e. other eBook readers like Kindle, better browser, games, Android market...etc)... Also, it's much lighter and thinner than NookColor. So from this point of view, I am very happy with the purchase. The capacitive touch screen works very well (although it misses my touch once in a while especially when tablet is busy), and the battery lasts very long (~ 10 hrs dimmed screen w/o wifi, just reading books) My biggest issue is that the wifi connectivity sometimes drops, and so i have to restart the wifi, but it might be my problem as I haven't heard other people complaining about this particular issue. It does have front facing camera, but it's sluggish and resolution is not that great. This doesn't concern me as I never need to use camera.
Like other reviewers mentioned, I wished it had more RAM, easier tethering with AT&T, higher resolution like Galaxy Tab...etc, but then it won't be priced below $300. So overall, I think Archos 70 is currently the most cost effective 7" Android tablet in the market and an excellent color eBook reader. I even sold my Kindle reader as I started using this as an eBook reader, so I recouped half of its price already!
update (12/20/2010) - I still LOVE this device. I just installed the latest firmware update(2.0.71), and this resolved my wifi issue, which was actually known issue for people who use WPA2/AES encryption. The update also resolved the slow SMB connectivity for shared network storage! Now I can reliably stream Terabytes of movies and songs from my Windows shared drive! Amazon also just updated its Kinlde app for Android, and reading books on this device is pleasure! It's much faster and easier to navigate than Kindle 3 device, and I can now read book in dark without having to attach those cumbersome eBook light. By the way, people say reading on LCD gives you loss of sleep and eye strain...etc, but I think it's a myth. Just dim the backlight until your eyes get comfortable while you read, and it actually helps you fall a sleep at night. Also, I am not sure if this was due to this firmware update, but now I got the tethering work from my AT&T windows smart phone (motorola q9h) over bluetooth!! Now I can connect to internet outside my house!! I am very impressed so far with this device and quick software/firmware update from Archos.
